Did you know that your favorite comb or detangling brush could secretly be working against your healthy hair journey?
When we talk about growing long, healthy hair, the focus is usually on products — shampoos, conditioners, oils, and treatments. But there’s something hiding in plain sight that could be undoing all your efforts: your hair tools.
Every time you run a brush through your hair, it collects oil, shed strands, product residue, and dirt. Over time, if these tools are not disinfected, they become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Using them repeatedly without cleaning doesn’t just affect your hair’s shine; it can lead to scalp infections, dandruff, irritation, and even breakage.
At KL’s Natural Beauty Bar, we believe your tools should love your hair, not harm it. Here’s a step-by-step guide to keeping them squeaky clean:
1. Remove Strands and Buildup
Always start by taking out shed hair caught between bristles or comb teeth. This prevents residue from clinging to your tools during cleaning.
2. Wash with Warm Soapy Water
Soak your combs, brushes, and clips in warm water mixed with mild shampoo or antibacterial soap for about 10–15 minutes. This loosens dirt and oils.
3. Disinfect Properly
After washing, use rubbing alcohol (70% or more) or a salon-approved disinfectant spray to kill bacteria and fungi. For metal tools like scissors, this step is non-negotiable.
4. Rinse and Air Dry
Lay tools on a clean towel and let them dry completely. Damp tools encourage mold growth — something no one wants near their hair.
5. Store in a Clean Pouch or Container
Leaving tools on counters or in open spaces exposes them to dust and germs. Store them in a pouch, drawer, or closed container to keep them fresh until next use.
Personal tools mean personal care. The more exclusive they are to you, the better for your hair health.
Healthy hair doesn’t stop at products or protective styles. Sometimes, it starts with the simplest things — like the cleanliness of the tools in your hands.
