The weather is shifting, and with the harmattan dryness approaching, it’s important to adjust your hair routine. Natural hair already tends to dryness, so preparing early helps prevent breakage, knots, and that straw-like feel.

One technique that makes a big difference is oil rinsing — applying oil between your shampoo and conditioner. It boosts moisture retention, softens the hair, and makes detangling easier. I discovered its effectiveness while working with a client whose hair was extremely dry and tangled. A quick oil rinse followed by the LOC method turned a difficult detangling session into a smooth one.
Only a few oils truly penetrate the hair shaft: Olive oil, Coconut oil, and Avocado oil. Using these helps bind moisture into the strands for longer-lasting hydration.
How to Oil Rinse:
Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
Apply your preferred penetrating oils.
Add conditioner on top.
Leave it in for at least 10 minutes (or longer with heat), then rinse.
Benefits of Oil Rinsing:
Easier detangling
Better moisture retention
Softer, smoother hair
Added shine
Fewer single-strand knots
Because the air will get drier, here are additional steps to include in your routine:
Deep Condition Consistently:
Weekly deep conditioning is essential. Using heat helps treatments penetrate more effectively.
Give Your Ends Extra Care:
Your ends are the driest and most fragile part of your hair. Apply more product to them when moisturizing or conditioning.
Protective Styling:
Styles that hide your ends reduce moisture loss. Begin with clean, conditioned, well-moisturized hair and spritz moisture into your style during the week.
Nighttime Protection:
Use satin or silk scarves, bonnets, or pillowcases to reduce dryness and breakage caused by cotton.
Hydrate Internally:
Drink plenty of water and be mindful of your nutrition — your hair responds to what happens inside as much as outside.
By adding these small changes and staying consistent, your hair can remain soft, hydrated, and manageable throughout the season.
