Starting your natural hair journey can be exciting. You see someone with beautiful, full, waist-length curls and suddenly you’re ready to buy every product they used, try every hairstyle you’ve saved and start counting the days until your own hair looks the same. Then reality sets in.
Your hair shrinks. It gets tangled. One wash day somehow turns into half a day. The product that worked perfectly for someone else does absolutely nothing for you. And after months of waiting, you may start wondering, “Is my hair even growing?”
If you’re new to natural hair, there are a few things we wish more people knew before starting the journey.
1. Your Hair Will Not Look the Same Every Day
Natural hair has a mind of its own sometimes. One day your curls are defined and behaving. The next day, they have decided that shrinkage is the only acceptable option. That’s normal.
Your hair can look completely different depending on how you styled it, how much moisture it has, the weather, whether it was stretched and even how you slept on it.
Don’t let social media convince you that your hair should look perfectly defined, stretched and laid every single day.
Natural hair is versatile. Sometimes it will be fluffy. Sometimes it will be frizzy. Sometimes the curls will be popping. Sometimes they simply will not cooperate. It doesn’t mean your hair is unhealthy.
2. Shrinkage Is Not the Enemy
You can have six inches of hair and look like you have three. Welcome to shrinkage.
It can be frustrating when you know your hair is getting longer but you can’t actually see the length. But shrinkage is simply your hair showing its natural texture. Trying to eliminate it completely isn’t necessary.
If you want to see your length occasionally, stretching your hair can help. But don’t feel like your natural hair needs to constantly look longer to be considered beautiful or healthy.
3. Your Hair Will Not Behave Like Someone Else’s
This is probably one of the biggest lessons you can learn. Your favourite naturalista’s routine might not work for you.
The product that gives her amazing definition might leave your hair feeling dry. The style that lasts for two weeks on her might start frizzing on you after three days. Her hair might love heavy creams while yours prefers lighter products.
That’s because hair responds differently to products, techniques and routines. Instead of constantly asking, “What does she use?” start asking, “What does my hair respond well to?”
Learning your own hair will take you much further than copying someone else’s routine.
4. You Don’t Need Every Product You See
The natural hair aisle can be dangerous.
A new leave-in? You need it.
A new growth oil? Add to cart.
A new curl cream that promises “maximum definition”? Definitely.
Before you know it, you have ten products sitting on your shelf and no idea which one is actually doing anything. More products don’t automatically mean healthier hair. Start with the basics and pay attention to how your hair responds. You can build your routine from there.
Sometimes your hair needs consistency more than it needs another product.
5. Growth Takes Time
We understand the excitement of wanting long hair. But natural hair isn’t an overnight project.
Your hair grows at its own pace, and the length you retain will depend on how well you care for it along the way. You may not notice dramatic changes from month to month, especially if your hair shrinks significantly.
Take pictures occasionally. Pay attention to your ends. Notice changes in fullness and length over time. Don’t spend every wash day stretching your hair to check whether it has grown. Give it time.
6. Your Hair Journey Will Probably Change
The routine that works for you today may not be the routine you use forever.
Your hair can change as it gets longer. Your lifestyle can change. You may start colouring your hair, wearing locs, using protective styles more often or simply discover that you prefer a completely different way of caring for your hair.
And that’s okay. Your hair journey doesn’t have to follow a fixed formula. You are allowed to change your routine when your hair or lifestyle requires something different.
7. Healthy Hair Should Be the Goal, Not Just Long Hair
Long hair is beautiful, but length alone doesn’t tell you everything about the condition of your hair.
You can have long hair that is extremely dry, breaking or damaged. You can also have shorter hair that is strong, healthy and well cared for. Instead of making length the only measure of success, pay attention to the overall condition of your hair.
Is it manageable?
Are your ends holding up?
Is your scalp comfortable and clean?
Are you experiencing excessive breakage?
Does your hair respond well to your routine?
These things matter too.
Your Natural Hair Journey Is Yours
There is no single correct way to be a naturalista.
You don’t have to use the most expensive products. You don’t have to have perfectly defined curls. You don’t have to know your exact hair type. And you certainly don’t have to reach a particular length by a particular age.
Learn your hair. Be patient with it. Take care of it consistently. And allow yourself to figure things out along the way.
Because the best natural hair routine isn’t necessarily the one that is trending.
It’s the one that works for your hair.
